Budgetum philosophy

Budgetum is built around one idea: understanding your money matters more than following rules. You make a plan, record what actually happens, look at the difference, and adjust. This page explains the principles behind the app and why some things work the way they do.

Why Budgetum Exists

Many budgeting apps try to teach a "correct" way to manage money. They push rigid rules, ask for an account or a bank connection before you can start, or put core features behind a subscription. For many people, this creates stress instead of clarity.

Budgetum started as a digital version of a paper budget: write down what you expect to spend next month, then mark what really happens. It is designed to adapt to how people actually live, earn, and spend, not the other way around.

No Single "Right" Way to Budget

Budgetum does not enforce a budgeting method.

You can:

  • Use zero-based budgeting, the 50/30/20 rule, or envelope-style accounts
  • Plan loosely without strict limits
  • Track expenses without planning anything
  • Focus only on the categories that matter to you
  • Ignore accounts, tags, contacts, and receipts if you don't need them

Expense types (Needs, Wants, Savings) add structure when it helps, for example when you are learning to budget, without forcing a method on anyone.

All of these approaches are valid. Budgetum's role is to support them, not to judge or correct them.

Planning and Tracking Are Separate, by Design

You can:

  • Plan amounts for categories in advance
  • Track transactions without planning anything
  • Adjust plans during the month
  • Overspend in one category and compensate in another

The difference between the plan and what happened is useful information, not a failure. If you plan $500 and spend $600, the app shows the $100 difference; you don't need to change the plan afterwards to make it look right. Many people spend their first months mostly measuring: guess, track, and adjust the next month.

Life doesn't reset on the first day of the month, so a new month can build on the last one. Copy Plan brings categories and planned amounts forward, and when a new month starts with no plan yet, the Budget screen offers to copy last month's plan.

Real-Life Structure, Not Abstract Categories

You are not locked into a fixed category system. During setup you can pick from suggested categories or start from scratch.

  • Sections group related areas of life (for example Housing, Food, Income)
  • Categories are the specific things you plan and track, as broad or as specific as you like: "Kids" or "Diapers", "Groceries" or "Detergent"

Sections and categories are one shared list used by every month, so renaming a category renames it everywhere and reports can follow it over time. Plans are separate for each month or custom period, so amounts can change as your life changes. You can also budget by calendar month or by your own periods, for example from payday to payday.

Detail When You Need It, Simplicity When You Don't

Budgetum has grown a lot since its first version, but every extra is optional.

You can keep things simple:

  • Create a few categories
  • Set a plan
  • Add expenses
  • See what happened

Or you can go deeper:

  • Split receipts into items
  • Use accounts and transfers to see where your money is
  • Use tags for trips, projects, or anything that crosses categories
  • Track spending by store or person
  • Analyze trends over time, on your phone or in Desktop Analytics on a computer

Nothing is mandatory.

No Bank Login

Budgetum never connects to your bank or asks for your bank login. You add transactions yourself, import a CSV file, or, with Pro, match a bank statement file (CSV or XLSX) against an account and approve its rows. Files are read on your device.

This is a deliberate choice. A short regular review, for example once a week, keeps you looking at where your money goes instead of transactions arriving unseen in the background. It also means no other service needs access to your bank account.

Calm, Pressure-Free Experience

Budgetum avoids tactics that create anxiety:

  • No aggressive warnings
  • No "you're doing it wrong" messages
  • No ads
  • No paywall in the core budgeting flow

Planning, tracking, and analytics are free. Budgetum Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It unlocks advanced tools (more than 5 recurring transactions, more than 5 tags, Saved Sets, and bank statement matching) and supports development. A budgeting app shouldn't add another monthly bill.

Say thanks in More → About is an optional tip for the developer. It doesn't unlock anything.

Offline-First and Private

Budgetum works offline, and you don't need to create an account.

  • Your budget is stored on your device. There is no Budgetum server holding your transactions.
  • Backups are files you create and keep wherever you choose.
  • A few optional extras use the internet: shared budget plan links (only when you create one), exchange-rate suggestions, and purchases.
  • Desktop Analytics at budgetum.app/analytics opens an export in your computer's browser and reads it there, without uploading it.

The app sends anonymous usage statistics and crash reports, which do not include your financial data. The Privacy Policy explains what is collected.

A Tool, Not a Teacher

Budgetum does not try to educate you with financial ideology.

Instead, it aims to:

  • Show your data clearly
  • Help you notice patterns
  • Give you tools to organize money your way

Better decisions come from understanding, not pressure.

Budgetum in One Sentence
